Farm and Urban Food System Tour
Elmwood Stock Farm, Food Chain, Glean KY & West Sixth Brewing
Sign up today for the Organic Association of Kentucky (OAK) conference for more information.
Explore unique partnerships emerging among urban food system stakeholders and a nearby farm. Hear from the farmer and organizational leaders about how they are connecting organic production, food access and education, while also finding opportunities for synergy and resource sharing.
Begin the tour with a visit to Elmwood Stock Farm, a 6th generation family farm outside of Lexington, KY committed to producing a variety of organic vegetables, meats, and eggs. The 550-acre property houses greenhouses, high tunnels, vegetable fields, packing barn, plus livestock (cattle and pigs and sheep) and poultry (chickens and turkeys) out on pasture. Join Mac Stone for a guided walking tour that will offer a look at the ins and outs of farming organically. He will explain how USDA certified organic vegetables, meats and eggs are planned, planted and prepared for distribution through CSA, farmers markets, restaurants, and grocery stores each week, offering a look at the behind-the-scenes work that goes into bringing the freshest products to the community. Guests will also learn about the impact of organic food and farming on human, animal and community health and ways they can incorporate sustainable principles into their own gardens, homes and lives.
