You know what they say – sometimes it’s good to have friends in high places. In our case, we’re referring to the Mountain West (Colorado to be specific).
While Mac was on his personal organic revolution, and working with Ann and John to grow Elmwood Stock Farm’s direct-to-people farm business, a desire to be able to provide a wider range of organic fruit began to build. It was a tricky prospect though—growing tree fruit organically in our region is inherently very difficult because of our extremely humid climate.
Luckily, Mac had made connections with several organic growers during his time spent on the Organic Farming Research Foundation (OFRF) board, one of whom was growing peaches, pears, and more on the family farm in Colorado. After reaching out— and even taking a tour of the orchard! —we were able to secure some delicious organic fruit from that region for our food and farm family. Delicious, juicy, organically grown fruit was freshly picked and via special delivery, the rest is history!
We’re very thankful to have found such wonderful organic partners who can fill in a gap in our own production, and strengthen our organic growing community and we hope to foster these connections for years to come.
This year we’re excited to offer organic peaches, pears and nectarines this summer. All are available here at our farm store and in more limited quantities at the farmers market after CSA members get first pick.
P.S: Stay tuned for more fruit to arrive as we head into fall!
We look forward to these fresh and delicious 100% organic peaches all year long. Make them into a pie, blend into a smoothie, chop up into a salsa or enjoy them like we do – by themselves, eaten over a sink to catch the juices. Available in a 3lb order or 20lb box for enjoying now or freezing/canning for later!
Sweet and juicy, organic Bartlett pears like these are about as tasty as they come. Try them in crisps, crumbles, cakes or even sliced into salads.
Like a peach’s fuzz-less cousin, these 100% organic nectarines are no less flavorful and equally as enjoyable to eat on a warm, late summer day. We especially love to make them into jam to save for the colder months.
No, they’re not fruit, but we would be remiss if we didn’t remind you that the organic, bi-color sweet corn is in season and not to be missed. Roasted on the grill, brushed with butter and sprinkled with sea salt is our favorite way to enjoy it but there’s a cornucopia of options out there!
