Attending the 2024 OAK Conference

This past weekend we were fortunate enough to be able to attend this year’s Annual Farming Conference, put on by the Organic Association of Kentucky or OAK as we like to call them.

The annual conference brings together organic farmers and food advocates from all across Kentucky to talk shop, share ideas and resources and build community. We make a point to attend each year and look forward to connecting with our friends and colleagues but this time was a little different because we got the opportunity to be a part of some of the panels!

On Friday, John was part of a panel that explored organic small grain production in Kentucky. He shared more about the ways we harvest from our fields and create our organic stone-ground cornmeal as well as the lessons we’ve learned and challenges we’ve faced doing so.

Then on Saturday, Mac was part of the keynote presentation on adopting practices, increasing resiliency and strengthening systems in the organic farming community. Each panel presenter brought their own perspectives to what is understandably a big and nuanced topic and Mac shared the evolution of Elmwood Stock Farm and how we’ve made changes in practices to adapt to shifting food systems and customer trends.

Later on in the day John joined another panel to discuss the use of plastics in organic farm operations. The use of plastics in organic farming is a hotly debated topic and he, along with the other farmers on the panel, weighed the different non-plastic alternatives and the challenges and successes in reducing plastic use in their operations.

It was a great time had by all and we can’t wait to go again next year! We will update this post with links to recordings of the talks once they are available.
