Mac’s Top Turkey Tips

Mac Stone here. I probably don’t need to tell you that the holidays are a hectic time of year. That’s why now’s the perfect time to pre-order your organic, pasture-raised turkey from us, especially as we expect to sell out as we get closer to Thanksgiving.

As an added relief from future holiday stress, I’m sharing with you my top ten tips for ordering your turkey and planning out your big holiday dinner:
10. Know where your turkey comes from. The turkey is the centerpiece of your holiday meal! Let your guests know their turkey was responsibly raised with access to pasture, sunshine, fresh forage and organic grains.

9. Try something new (which is actually something old). Heritage turkeys more closely resemble wild turkeys rather than grocery-store birds. Their deeply flavored meat, richly colored dark meat, and more equal ratio of dark to light meat make them a special purchase. Start a meaningful new tradition this year with a heritage turkey on your table.

8. Reserve your turkey ahead of time. Small-scale turkey producers like us start planning their holiday turkey supply in the spring, and when the turkeys are gone, they’re gone! Limited sizes of heritage and broad breasted turkeys are available.

7. Purchase the meat you need and want. Some families prefer white meat; others dark meat. Two whole turkeys is often too much meat, but one whole turkey and a few additional cuts may do the trick. Contact us and we can help you plan your ideal turkey meal.

6. Make your holiday a source-from-small-farms feast. We love green bean casserole and corn pudding as much as the next farm family, but when it comes to an all-local Thanksgiving meal, we make different plans based on what’s in season and available from small farms: organic and pasture-raised heritage turkey, kale salad, pumpkin (butternut squash) pie, mashed potatoes and turnips, roasted sweet potatoes and Brussels sprouts, and sage sausage cornbread dressing!

5. Prepare for leftovers! Go big with your turkey, and enjoy the organic, pasture-raised meat for some time to come. Enchiladas, chili, soup, pulled turkey BBQ, even cooked turkey meat frozen for a future meal—these are all excellent reasons to be sure your turkey plan takes leftovers into account.

4. Understand your turkey recipe *before* it’s time to cook the turkey. There are many recipes out there, and especially when cooking a heritage turkey, it’s possible to overcook. Review your options, and choose the method you’re most comfortable with.

3. Ship a turkey to someone special. Elmwood Stock Farm is one of the few farms in the country to raise organic, pasture-raised heritage turkeys, and there aren’t a whole lot of us offering organic, pasture-raised broad breasted turkeys, either. You certainly can’t pop into the grocery store to get a turkey like these, but we can ship to your friends and family across the continental US, whether you’re traveling and want it to meet you there or you’re sending a turkey in your place.

2. Embrace a new tradition in 2024. Preorder your pasture-raised, organic turkey from farmers you trust! Elmwood Stock Farm has been certified organic for close to 25 years and providing food directly to our community for 30 years. The turkey you receive from us is raised on pasture with organic grains, sunshine, and foraged seeds and insects. Our sixth-generation family farm is one of few that raises organic, heritage turkeys, and we’re proud to provide the centerpiece for so many holiday meals.

1. Enjoy your holiday and take time to connect with friends, family and loved ones from near and far.
