New Faces: Meet Elizabeth

Our ranks have swelled here on the farm. And not only because many of our seasonal employees have returned. New faces are about, contributing a diverse set of roles, all helping to run the farm business. Some of these hats are worn by people behind the curtain, performing tasks you might never see in harvest, fulfillment, and operations. But they’re the reason you receive your CSA share like clockwork at the same time each week, or receive your bundle of organic pastured meats, or pickup your favorites at the weekly farmers market.

Other roles put people in positions you’re more likely to see. One person whose work you’ll definitely see is Elizabeth Hall, our new Marketing Associate.

Get to know her in this short interview.

What’s your role here on the farm?

Answer: Hi! I’m Elmwood’s new Marketing Associate. I’m in charge of much of the public-facing media and event planning you’ll see from us. My job is to tell the rich story of Elmwood Stock Farm’s sustainable practices and its six generations of family farmer operation. And also talk to you about delicious food.

Why did you apply for a role on a small, family-owned organic farm?

Answer: I’ve been drawn to regenerative farming for a while now. While I don’t have an ag background or space for a garden, access to healthy food has always been important to me. When I lived in Central Florida, I helped run marketing for a network of community fridges that addressed food access disparity in food deserts.

Kentucky faces a lot of the same challenges! I believe local farms are indispensable in closing the gap between nutrition and community. I’m also a huge proponent of any business that operates in a way that protects their local ecosystem. I feel lucky to be here.

You’re a Lexington local. Did you grow up around here?

Answer: Not at all. My parents were military, so my childhood was spent moving all over the Eastern US as well as overseas for a bit. I’m really glad to have found consistent community in Lexington and Georgetown.

Did you have a relationship with Elmwood Stock Farm before joining up?

Answer: I went to the Lexington Farmers Market all the time! I still do, just less often. Now, I just grab my produce at the farm.

Who are you outside of work? What are some things you enjoy in your free time?

Answer: I’m a creative type, so I love illustrating and listening to music. I also love riding my bike around town and going on hikes. I’m in a perpetual state of learning new things. Right now, I’m learning my sewing machine, how to rock climb, and how to play piano.

Tell us about your favorite thing we offer here at Elmwood.

Answer: We’re still in our winter/spring season, so I’m always eating our Murasaki sweet potatoes. We only have them in the fall and winter, so I’m gonna miss them come summer.

What’s your favorite recipe you’ve cooked using food from the farm?

Answer: I’m a lover of simple things. A bok choy sauté with a fried egg, rice and green onion or scallions is a very comforting dish. Also, beets make amazing smoothies (and the color means they’re always pretty).

You’re a few months in at the time of this interview. What’s your favorite thing about working on the farm so far?

Answer: Making and posting cool videos about what we do is my favorite thing I get to do right now. That and visiting the cows. I like to think they love my company.
